How To Avoid Camera Loss

Andrew McDonald had a pictorial guide to keeping your camera safe...thought I'd make a gif outta if to prevent scrolling.

"All you have to do is take some photos – which you never delete from your camera – so when someone finds your camera at the bottom of the gorilla pit they are able to locate you and return the lost property to its rightful owner.

To illustrate just how you can safeguard your camera from the crippling effects of Camera Loss, here are the pics that I always keep on my camera."

If this doesn't get your camera back, then the last option is to get a cash advance and go buy a new one. Hopefully you won't have to worry about doing that though.

  1. Gonna have to do that on my camera!

  2. Most cameras do video...just leave a short recording for anyone that finds (or steals) yer camera

    ReplyDelete
  3. I really want to find your camera. =]

    ReplyDelete
  4. Cool idea, but I would hate to have to repeatedly watch that gif over and over again just to copy that entire email address.

It's almost the equivalent of hearing a long voicemail from someone you have to call back then they reply with their number very quickly at the end :).

Maybe add one more pic with just your email and display it longer than the others?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Jason. . . I think you missed the boat. It wouldn't be a gif on his camera. Whoever found it would clearly stop on the picture and copy down the address taking whatever time they needed. As you have not found this camera, that time frame is not required.

    Good idea :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. @Jason
I don't think he leaves a gif on the camera, rather the images that make up the frames of the gif. Therefore the person could just leave the camera preview on the frame with the email.

    ReplyDelete
  7. @ Jason. On the camera, this wouldn't be a gif, but a series of shots..... so they could just stay on the pic for as long as they needed to get the email address.

This pretty high on my 'Awesome Shit I found on the Internet Today' list! Thanks!

  8. I would seriously smash your camera out of the stupidity of having to watch that incredibly long gif full of mugging and overacting just to get a stupid email address.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Jason, he didn't mean for you to create a gif to put on your camera. Just to take pictures with information on how to return the camera. You'd know he only put them all together in a little gif to avoid you having to scroll, if you'd bothered to read.

    ReplyDelete
  10. @Jason

LOL, it's not a gif on the camera, it's a series of pictures. He's just put it in gif format so us, the viewer on our computers who don't physically have his camera, can view his idea with ease while not waiting for a page of a bunch of pictures to load. ........

    ReplyDelete
  11. @ Jason... you idiot, that was just a slide show of all the pictures. If you actual found this guy's camera it would be a series of pictures that you could look at individual. This means you can look at the one with the email address as long as you need to read the big scary words

    ReplyDelete
  12. The photos are in the camera independently, not in a .gif
Whoever had the camera could spend as long as they want on any one of the photos.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am fairly certain it wouldn't be an animated gif on his camera, I think he just made it that way for the sake of the website. Think about it, how many animated gifs do you have on you digital camera?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Man, he's cute. I'd steal his camera just to be able to give it back to him.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Umm you don't put a GIF on the camera, you just take a bunch of pictures and when they're scrolling through that's how it will look.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Jason: You wouldn't leave something like this as a gif on a camera (Probably only very expensive high-end cameras can work with gif images anyway). This would be saved as a series of pictures; you open the first picture, and it's the first picture in the video; you click to the next picture, and it's the next one from the video, etc. He just put it up as a gif on the computer because it's easier that way. :-)

BTW, that wasn't meant to sound mean or "OMG UR A RETARD" or anything like that; you just sounded like you needed an explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It wouldn't be a GIF on the camera,
    just a series of photos.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jason, if it's in your camera, the person isn't watching a gif, they're looking at your camera screen. The gif is an example.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Jason, I think the gif was created only for the blog so that we wouldn't have to scroll and scroll and scroll, as the creator mentioned. On a camera, you would simply have to click the next button when viewing photos. The image with the email address would be visible on the camera screen for as long as you want it to since you have to click the next button to move on to the next picture.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Awesome idea. Think I'll have to do this ASAP.....
    :D

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ha! I love it.

And Jason, you're silly. He made the gif only for the website out of a series of photos which he never deletes off of his camera.

    ReplyDelete
  22. On his camera they would be individual photos, so you could just look at the email adress photo for longer...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Jason...It's not a gif on the camera. Each frame in that gif is a single photo :p xDDD

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jason, you are an idiot. It's a bunch of photographs made into a gif. Obviously on the camera, it's going to be just a still shot (unless one does video), so there'd be plenty of time to make note of the email address.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'd just keep the camera and send him copies of the photos that I take with it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @ Jason
If you read his comments properly these are stills on his camera. He just put them together in a gif fot the blog so that people wouldnt have to scroll

    ReplyDelete
  27. I know they are lol. 42DD :o)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm willing to bet those are separate pictures that just happened to be taken with that camera.. not an actual moving gif. He just made it a gif to give you an idea what to do..
That way yes, you can look at that picture with the email for as long as you need to.
    Common sense, no?

    ReplyDelete
  29. jason... these are individual pictures on the camera... so you can look at each one for as long as you want...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Interesting idea, however not very practical.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Actually, I think each frame is a single photo, and he put it in .gif animated format so us viewers on the internet wouldn't have to scroll down for ages.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh and also I forgot to say I LOVE this idea!

    ReplyDelete
  33. jason you fool, you can't have animated gifs on your camera! those are all the images he keeps on his camera, and he compiled it into a gif to show us.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Jason - haha - this is only an animated gif for the sake of the blog. The camera would hold the individual frames.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Jason, his .gif is actually a string of pictures on his camera... it's not actually a stop action video on his camera. All you would have to do is look at that one picture to get his email address.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ahhhh... I think a couple of you commenters are totally missing the point!

    Loved this - hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well Jason, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have the .gif on your camera. You would have the series of pictures which the person would view when they cycled through the pictures. duh. It would be easy to just remain on the picture with the information

    ReplyDelete
  38. you wouldn't have to watch it over and over again, i believe these are meant to be individual pictures on the camera. so when you got to the picture with the email address, you can write it down, and then continue scrolling through.

either way, awesome idea. my mom always taught us to put return address stickers along the side of the camera.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's only in gif form for the site, the original's in pictorial form.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jason...I'm pretty sure you could just pause on the picture in order to copy down the email address.
I'm assuming that the .gif wouldn't actually be on the camera.

    Anyway, cool idea!

    ReplyDelete
  41. You do realize that these are kept as static pictures on a camera? It's not a .gif on the camera.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jason... It's not going to be a GIF on the camera... It's just going to be a series of pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jason, the gif isn't actually on the camera. You scroll one picture at a time so you can leave the email address for as long as you want. He just displayed as a gif on the website so it's easier to look at.

That being said, this idea is super cute :) I might have to do that myself!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Jason, the gif isn't actually on the camera. It's just one picture at a time so you can leave the email address on for as long as you like. He just displayed it as a gif on the website to make it easier to look at that.

That being said, this idea is super cute :) I might have to do that myself!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jason -- the camera wouldn't show the GIF. you'd be scrolling through the individual pictures yourself, silly!

  47. I THINK JASON GOT IT, GUYS, THE 4,000 OF YOU CAN STOP TELLING HIM WHAT A GIF
    IS

    ReplyDelete
  48. yea, we all get it..jasons an idiot and we know its not a gif...we get it, we can read the first reply to his comment

    ReplyDelete
  49. i think jason gets the idea.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hey Jason - everyone hates you.

Great idea! Unless it's stolen, this is a perfect way to get your camera returned, because everyone who finds a camera secretly hopes to find risque pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  51. @ Jason. On the camera , this wouldn't be a gif, but a series of shots (Probably only very expensive high-end cameras can work with gif images anyway)..... so they could just stay on the pic for as long as they needed to get the email address. ReplyDelete
  53. I want to hug you and I haven't even found your camera

    ReplyDelete
  54. Ya know... most cameras are USABLE as memory devices... if NOT they still are using a SD card or some other flash device. Just save a file named RETURNINFO.doc or myemailaddress.rtf or make a folder called [how to return the camera] or maybe, [ill trade you nude pics of myself for my camera back]

    maybe that was too long.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lol. You'd figure after the 10th comment or so people would realize that they don't have to keep explaining the gif thing to Jason. -.-

Cool idea, btw. I've never thought to save a picture on it like that.

    ReplyDelete
  56. JAAAASSSOOOOONNNN!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Omf people. I believe -Jason- gets the idea already. Just shut-up about the damn .gif thing.

    Now, on to my opinion.

This is a really good idea if you have actually lost your camera, and it has not been stolen. And then, if it has been stolen, this idea is still pretty good, but is not going to do you any good. Just hope to god it gets lost and some nice person finds it, and will actually return it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. LOL!! Hmmm, maybe Jason isn't as stupid as you all think he is ....he got all of the attention here!!!! Neat idea & hysterical series of photos!! [:<)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Reading through these comments is just as entertaining as the gif itself, nice guys.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Is there some reason readers can't read comments posted by others. Seriously, 20 people correcting him? Did you just all want to sound smart or is there a glitch in the blog where you can't read others' comments?

    CAR

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Jason--since there seems to be some confusion (mostly on *your* part) about what the poster is talking about, I thought I'd take some time and clarify things for you:

    You said:

    >Cool idea,
...yes it is, as most of the other commenters have recognized, but clearly you don't get it. And pardon me, but I find your compliment a little disingenuous, since you go on to slam the idea in the rest of your post. If you slam it, how good could it be? Anywho, moving on...

    >but I would hate to have to repeatedly watch that gif over and over again

...well, you make that excrusiatingly clear in your irrational dislike of this very clever idea, but since you are in the minority, you might want to think twice about the terms you're using. The internet doesn't do subtlety well, and when you come in with guns a'blazin' like you have, you're bound to raise some hackles--as you have clearly have here, given the response against you.

    >just to copy that entire email address.

...um, I don't get you here. This doesn't make any sense. It's a GIF, which (if you don't know) means it's a computer image file, and as such, you can't just drag your cursor over words that appear on it and copy and paste them. That would require some sophisticated OCR technology (that's On-screen Code Reading if you didn't know). So, what you'd have to do is get the animated gif off of the camera, and download it into a media player like Windows Media Player and pause it at the appropriate moment. You have to have good timing though, so it may take a few tries.

    >It's almost the equivalent of hearing a long voicemail from someone you have to call back then they reply with their number very quickly at the end

I'm with you here. There's nothing I hate more than some windbag leaving a long, pointless message on my phone, waiting and waiting for some important information that they are ostensibly trying to communicate, only to find they just end with "hey, just wanted to say what's up. Call me back at X". This whole concept would work better if this guy got rid of the cutesy-pie antics and just left an animated gif of his email address--maybe spell it out one letter at a time on the whiteboard.

    >:).

Emoticons are so old and busted at this point. Please don't insult our intelligence. What is that anyway? A sideways smiley with a beauty mark on its chin?

    >Maybe add one more pic with just your email and display it longer than the others?

As I've already discussed, the better route to go would be to spell out the email a letter at a time. If you're so sure of your method, why don't you try it yourself? Do something constructive for a change, instead of just criticising.

Well, I'm not sure I was able to really get my message across to you here, but the important thing is that the internet is all about civility, and paying attention to what people are saying. For god's sakes, read what someone has posted carefully (and the other comments too!) before you just fire off a thoughtless reply to a blog post.

Maybe someone else (or even better a bunch of people) could join in and reiterate what I've said--maybe over and over again? Maybe then you'll get a better idea of not just what an animated gif is, but how you should go about having a conversation on the internet?

@Andrew McDonald--brilliant work on the gif. But maybe you should think about leaving it as a non-animated string of gifs--some phones don't support the animated variety. Also, spelling out the email address would be really helpful. Cheers mate!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Guys, I read through all the comments, but I still think it is a stupid idea to store it as a gif on the camera!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Yeah ok people, this is a great idea but still I don't understand, what if i can't pause at that moment where the email address shows up?? I'd have to start all over again, this is not practical at all..

    ReplyDelete
  64. Haha I was LMAO! There must've been over 50 comments @jason that said the exact same thing.

The thing is that if someone were to get the camera, they might not necesarily have a card reader or a hookup for your camera... so in this case, it would be much better to simply have a string of photos, or a simple photo with a contact on it. Either way, I think this is an awesome Idea, and I am totally gonna do this! :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. @Jason--Just my 2cents, but its not an animated gif on the phone. Its just a string of pictures with the dude's email on it. duh!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Damn Jason is probably drunk out of his mind right now trying to forget the one mistake that incited about 100 people to correct him.

We get it, it's not a gif on his camera, geez. Talk about the power of reinforcement.

    -----

Anyway, great idea! Let's hope it warms the sould of the person that found it/stole it and they return it.

  70. Jason, you son of a b!tch, he's not gonna have the gif on his camera. I'm gonna come over there and kick your butt, you moron. You can't even put a gif on a camera you silly monkey. Most cameras don't have the capabilities to read gifs you see. I don't know why, but they just don't. I guess no one thought that someone will want to do what you think this man has done. Jason... you're a n00b.

    ReplyDelete
  71. YEAH JASON ITS JUST A BUNCH OF STILLS NOT A ANIMATED GIF YOU GOOFUS DID YOU NEVER UZE A DIGITAL CAMERA BEFORE? NOOB! ROFLLOLZ1010111100111111!!!!

  72. I have to second and third what Anonymous has said. I think Jason understands now that the gif is not animated on the phone. Enough!

  74. Who brings their camera to the post office??

JASON JASON JASON!!! IT WOULDN'T BE A GIF ON HIS CAMERA YOU SILLY RABBIT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think the GIF goes too fast to copy down the email address very easily.

    It's also written small.

    ReplyDelete
  77. okay, look--I was going to give you a pass, Jason, since everyone else has been harshing on ya, but I kinda think you started all this on purpose. I mean, the first post was a misunderstanding, granted, but the second one when you claimed to still not get it has got to be bullsh!t. I'll say it once more--this is clearly not an animated gif on the camera.

Stop trying to fuel the fire for your own notoriety's sake, and let us all get on with our lives.

And the rest of you--don't feed the trolls!!!!!! just ignore Jason, and maybe he'll go away.

    ReplyDelete
  78. It's ridiculously funny the number of people who chastised Jason for his comment about the animated gif. Andrew clearly states in his first sentence that he would "make it into an animated gif to prevent scrolling". So despite the alternative methods in which a person could leave a 'message' on their camera Jason has a very valid point. He's the one that has as an accurate understanding of what Andrew suggested at the very top of his post. Wow. People

  79. I just want to hug poor Jason now. What's a gif?

    ReplyDelete
  86. What's also funny is the number of people that don't realize that probably half of the @Jason comments are intentionally ignoring the number of people "helpfully" explaining about the gif.

I also really like the troll feeding reply saying not to feed the trolls.
