I don't think letting your cat catch a bat is a smart Idea. Bats can carry rabies, and its cruel for the bat as well. It almost certainly didnt live after that. Pretty terrible
Hey that's great! It's nice to see a picture of a cat that isn't just soppy cuteness! Cats are such marvelous hunters. I like bats as well of course - but as someone said above, it is all the circle of life and beautiful in that.
to deny a cat its basic hunting instinct would be just as cruel, trying to breed out what has let these animals survive for ages for the sake of those who dont want to see anything die is outrageous. What do you think the cat did with it afterwords jess? unlike humans he probably just gobbled the little critter right down and not a bit went to waste, it also means he didnt have to eat cat food which is made up of ground up animal parts to begin with, whats the difference besides freshness? im not trying to be anonymous either, i just dont have an account, im Mat McMahon, strong proponent of animals being animals

after watching the video a few times, I have to agree that the bat probably wasn't real. if you watch carefully, it looks like the bat is actually moving in a pendulum motion...kind of like it was attached to a high ceiling with fishing line or something, held high, and then let go to swing above the cat.
but it is still a cool video. cats are cool.
and mat - cats are well known for not eating everything they kill. my grandmother's cat leaves dead animals on her porch all the time. also, it is believed that cats are responsible for killing off huge numbers of songbirds every year. they've done studies that showed that even well-fed cats with access to plenty of food will still go off and kill birds, squirrels, etc.
Definitely fake, bats wings aren't moving after it's caught, which they would, even right away. In RL, yeah bad idea with rabies and all but for the sake of entertainment? It's ok.
I'm pretty sure domestic cats are the only felines that hunt for sport. But it's still their natural instinct so it's not fair to say it was "cruel" to the bat. As a pet owner, I probably would have removed my cat from the room and called animal control just in case the bat (assuming it was real) was rabid. Vaccines are NOT 100% effective...sorry, dude. If the bat was in fact fake, then this is a pretty cool video :)
haha oh man, that cat looks just like a stray that my family caught and skinned. its hilarious, you know kinda like those bear rugs only its a cat! friends always get a kick out of it when they come over.
Firstly I have to say that's a pretty good jump from a standing start. Secondly to the PETA crowd, it's a cat, cat's eat smaller animals get over it. Thirdly to all the nay sayers about it being set up, has the internet made you so jaded that every time you see something that doesn't fit your pre conceived idea of reality you call "Fake" or "Shopped" maybe its time you unplugged your computer and got out for a while. If I had a bat flying around my house unintentionally and one of my cats was sitting in the hall watching the thing fly around I would grab my video camera and film it, so what's to say it wasn't so with this video, as to the bats wings not flapping wildly maybe a bit of animal instincts 101 is in order, animals have been known to play "Possum" animals have also been known to go into immediate shock and sometimes animals break things like necks and wings when plucked out of the air while they were trying to go as fast as possible <------ that-a-way Regardless, it was a wonderful feat of gymnastic athleticism from the cat.
I live on 20 acres... have dogs, cats, and bats. Have a large bat house up on a pole. The rabbies thing is way overblown. Keep your pets shots up and if you get bit (never happens) get a shot and boom, no problem. Bats eat mosquitos and spiders. They are good to have around. Cats can't catch them though. If one gets trapped in a house and can't get out it can tire itself out so much that a stalking cat could catch it. It might take the cat a while... give you time to follow it with a camera... so this might be real. It could happen.
A bat snuck into my apartment (it was a very old building) and I was not aware of it. I woke up around 3am to the noises of my cat playing with something that was squeaking. To my horror / amazement I had seen she had caught a bat (this being even more amazing since her previous owner had declawed her). I set the bat go but he did not make it because of a broken wing : (. My point is, however, to all of you bat lovers / cat haters out there, is that the owners probably did not plan to have a bat in their house, and thus the negative comments are just so inane. The cat was following its instincts and the negativity is ridiculous.
You're all bat sh*t crazy for arguing the logistics of something that was posted for entertainment purposes. Really? Have you no life that you would critique the damn thing to death????? IT WAS F-U-N-N-Y, damn it all!!! That cat is f*cking BIONIC! There's your logic!! That cat ate her damn wheaties! Stop killing the joy, people!!!
My cat did this one time, a bat flew into my room and I naturally freaked out ran out and shut the door. I threw my cat in there and left her for a few minutes upon peaking inside I saw her do this terrific mid air grab and get the bat... Upon re entry the bat was decapitated upon my rug, shes vicious.
What is so impressive about that? My cat catches any bats that happen to get into my house. As long as your cat is up to date on it's shots, rabies isn't a concern.
uh... for everyone who thinks the bat being killed is a travesty: wtf do u think cat food is made of? This industrious little cat is just cutting out the middle man.
Cats catch mice (a rodent), and it's OK, but the second the rodent has wings it's cruelty. Because that's what a bat is - a flying rodent. The PETA crowd does need to get over it.
Bats are not rodents; they actually have more in common with cats more than they do with mice. What sucks about this is bats are important to the eco-system; whereas mice are just pests.

"Yes, animals killing for food is cruel. Everyone should just starve to death. " LMAOOOOOOOOOOO Totally cruel. Because the cat couldn't, you know, turn around and walk two feet to its food bowl. /facepalm. Household cats have NO NEED to hunt for food. This is a badass GIF but idiocy must be confronted and neutralized. Maybe if it was outside catching something and not coming back to a warm, comfy home full of food and water all laid out for it in nice, pretty ceramic bowls. Idiot.
wow!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely awesome. I need to teach my cat that trick. :D
ReplyDeleteMy cat did this once, but I wasn't fortunate enough to film it.

ReplyDeleteI think this cat doesn't eat food from can
ReplyDeleteD: I was unaware that cats could double jump. I'm certainly jealous.
ReplyDeleteI feel really sorry for the bat. :( Poor bat. I wonder if it survived.
ReplyDeleteI think the mosquitoes paid the cat for this hit.

ReplyDeletejess- get over it. it's the circle of life. if you love bats, then get some & keep them safe & out of danger from cats.
ReplyDeleteI really don't think that was a real bat. Look at the wings; I think they flung it for the kitty.
ReplyDeletewhat a jump!!!!!!!

ReplyDeletethats kool, but i want to know why this family have a lighting stand in there kitchen.
ReplyDeletexkx
I don't care if this is fake or not (I say it is, they got it on film!?), as that cat jumped nearly five feet in the air.
ReplyDeleteand now the cat has rabies. :(
ReplyDeleteWas that a real bat?!
ReplyDeletegreat video but I agree that the bat was probably not real - flight was much too straight - more like a flung toy (not to mention camera in waiting).
ReplyDeleteIt was still a great leap for the cat!

ReplyDeleteWhen tigers are learning to hunt they also kill for a thrill, cats even.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. That is Gold Glove material. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's way more fun reading the comments than it is actually watching the video.
ReplyDeletethat cat is definitely fake
